Arunima Sinha, first Indian amputee to conquer Mt Everest

The 25-year-old former volleyball player Arunima Sinha becomes the first Indian amputee to scale world’s highest pick Mount Everest. On Tuesday she reached the 8,848 metre as a member of the Eco Everest Expedition from the Tata Group.

Arunima Sinha a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh lost one leg after being thrown off a Padmawati Express by some criminals in 2011. She was hospitalized with serious injury and eventually had to sacrifice one leg to survive.

“At that time everyone was worried for me. I then realised I had to do something in my life so that people stop looking at me with pity. I read about people scaling the Mt Everest. I spoke to my older brother and my coach who only encouraged me,” she told one TV channel.

Arunima has been trained at the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation camp in Uttarkashi under the guidance of Bachendri Pal.
