Liverpool, away from Anfield, made a bright start to the match, thanks to some lively display of football from Raheem Sterling. It was Liverpool who were enjoying the upperhand till the 12th minute when Wayne Rooney struck for the home team from the first positive chance that United could create. In fact just before Rooney’s opening goal, David De Gea had to make a fine save from Sterling to keep the scoreline at 0-0. United doubled their lead through Juan Mata although it seemed that he was in an off-side position when Van Persie had flicked it on his path with his head. The cross was floated in by Ashley Young from the left. At half time the score stood at 2-0 in favour of the Red Devils.

After the restart Liverpool once again looked brighter than the home side. But they failed to capitalize on the openings that could be traced in the United defense. In Fact Sterling got the golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when he got the ball from a hapless back pass which left De Gea absolutely in no-man’s-land. But he squandered away that chance as it seemed that perhaps he had too much of time to think before shooting. On the other side United did not look convincing enough yet scored the third goal of the night when robin van Persie found the back of the net after Juan Mata had founded him unmarked on the right. Liverpool pressed forward and even got some opportunities. But David De Gea stood like an invincible wall in front of the United goal. He pulled off quite a few numbers of brilliant saves to win the match for United and he got his rewards as he was adjudged the man-of-the-match.

With this victory United have gone 5 points clear of the team at fifth position which means they are well into the top four of the league table. Despite such a victory the goalkeeper getting the man-of-the-match award will surely give Louis van Gaal sleepless nights for United still look vulnerable at the back. Liverpool on the other hand are now in big trouble for their season has gone from bad to worse. Neither of their forwards is in good touch and at this level you can’t expect to win matches with misfiring central forwards. This match has just reinstated that fact for yet another time.
