SC stays Tamil Nadu from releasing three Rajiv Gandhi killers

The Supreme Court on Thursday has restrained the Tamil Nadu government from releasing three Rajiv Gandhi killers from jail.

Pronouncing a verdict on the petition filed by the Centre against the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to free all seven assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Supreme Court has asked Jayalalithaa government to not release AG Perarivalan alias Arivu, Sriharan alias Murugan, T Suthentiraraja alias Santhan till the further orders given.

The Supreme Court will hear the case on March 6.

While the Central government accused that Tamil Nadu government violated Section 432 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the state government has argued that it had a right to take a decision without consulting the union government.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a statement saying that the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was an attack on the soul of India and the release of Rajiv Gandhi killers would send a wrong signal to the society.

“Release of the killers of a former PM of India, our great leader, and other innocent Indians, would be contrary to all principles of justice…The TN government’s proposed course of action to release the killers of Shri Rajiv Gandhi is not legally tenable and should not be proceeded with. The government is moving a review petition in the SC on fundamental issues of law arising from the assassination of the late Shri Rajiv Gandhi,” the Prime Minister said.
