The Delhi High Court on Monday asked Delhi government, Police and the Centre to submit a report on Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam’s death on last Thursday.
The 20-year-old Nido was found death a few hours after he was allegedly beaten by shopkeepers at the Lajpat Nagar market in South Delhi.
Nido’s death stirred up protest in Delhi against the police inaction. North-East students reacted angrily against the incident. The friends of Nido alleged that Police did not do anything to protect him after the brawl took place at a shop where five people beaten him and made racist comments.
Nido’s post-mortem indicated some internal and external injuries. A toxicology report is expecte later today to reveal more details.
Meanwhile Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the case.
“We have lost confidence in the abilities of the Delhi Police, hence a separate probe is a must. The police is an interested party. Therefore, there’s a need for an independent inquiry. A number of letters have been written to me from chief Ministers and other leaders of the northeastern states,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said.
