“Maine sab gharwalo ko khatam kiya hai. Main tumhe bhi nahin chhodunga”: Hasnain told sister Sobia before attacking

Mumbai: While the real motive behind the slaughtering continues to remain in the dark, Hasnain Warekar’s sister, Sobia Bharmal, the sole survivor of the massacre, told the Mumbai police what she had seen on Saturday night before her brother attacked and injured her.

“Maine sab gharwalo ko khatam kiya hai. Main tumhe bhi nahin chhodunga.” (“I have killed all family members. You too, won’t be spared.”): was exactly what Hasnain Warekar told his sister before he attacked her with the butcher’s knife that he used to kill the other members of the family, before killing himself.

Sobia told the cops that they all had been invited to their family house in Thane’s Kasarvadavali for a dawaat (feast) on Saturday night. After the feast, she said, they all retired to bed in three different rooms. While Sobia and her sister Maria were sleeping in the bedroom on the ground floor, Sobia’s 5-month-old child had been left by her with Hasnain and his wife and children, who were sleeping in the bedroom upstairs.

At around 3am in the morning, she woke up to the sound of the door opening and saw the lights in the living room on, while her brother was slitting her sister Maria’s throat. She yelled at him, she told the cops, after which Hasnain attacked her, yelling that she too would be killed, just like the others. Though Sobia sustained injuries on her neck and stomach, she somehow managed to push Hasnain out of the room before locking it from inside and alerting the neighbors about the incident. The neighbors later shifted Sobia to Titan hospital where she is currently recuperating.

While the details of the spine-chilling massacre are with the Thane police, what continues to remain unknown is the reason that propelled Hasnain to kill all his family members before committing suicide. Sobia too, appeared to be clueless about the motive behind the murders, though she recalled her brother telling her on a number of occasions that his blood boiled on seeing them and that he would kill them all one day.

The police has seized Hasnain’s laptop and cell phone and had earlier found some pills, which apparently Hasnain used to consume. However, the police said they were waiting for the post mortem reports of the deceased family members to arrive, which could shed light on whether Hasnain spiked the food of his family members before committing the crime.

Neighbors, on one hand, described him as a quite, obedient person, while on the other hand, it was found from the school and college he had been to that he was an introvert and hardly made friends. It has also been found that the family was aware of Hasnain’s anger, but brushed it aside, considering it as his nature. The police said that they would be seeking help of psychiatrists to comprehend what must have led Hasnain to the extent.
