In a scintillating display of hyper-aggressive batting, Virendra Sehwag scored a blistering 219 off 149 balls in the fourth One Day International against West Indies at Holkar Stadium, Indore.
Sachin Tendulkar is the only other batsman to have scored a double century in ODI’s; Sachin scored 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior on 24th February 2010.
In today’s match, Sehwag’s first 50 were from 41 balls; his first hundred came from 69 balls – meaning the second 50 of his innings were off just 28 balls! He crossed 150 in 112 balls and completed the double century in 140 balls.
He was finally out – in the bowling of Kieron Pollard – for 219 scored off 149 balls. His phenomenal, record-breaking knock consisted of 25 boundaries and 7 sixers.
This is the 15th time that Sehwag has put on record a three-digit score in ODI’s.
Sehwag with scores of 22, 26 and 0 in the first three ODI’s against West Indies would hardly have been a source of concern to the West Indians when the match started. Yet, Virendra Sehwag has proved himself to be a bowler’s nightmare once again.
Barring a ‘life’ when he was on 170 and Darren Sammy dropped a rather easy catch, Sehwag’s knock was simply unblemished. It was a historic treat to watch Sehwag go on a rampage.
Sehwag’s double century has given India the formidable total of 418 (for 5 wickets in 50 overs at a run rate of 8.36)
