The CBI Special Court presided over by Hon.O.P.Saini has accepted the plea of Dr.Subramaniam Swamy, President of Janata Party, in the 2G Spectrum Case.
Dr.Subramaniam Swamy is allowed to recall himself as a witness and depose further. He would also explain why Sindhushree Khullar (Sports Secretary) and H.C.Awasthi (Joint Director of CBI) need be examined; the court would decide on the issue only after examining Swamy’s deposition.
Dr.Swamy is required to appear before the Court on 17th December to depose further as sought by him. He had earlier pleaded that he be allowed to depose further to prove that the then Finance Minister Chidambaram was very much a party to the decision taken by the then Telecom Minister A.Raja in fixing the price for the 2G Spectrum. Dr.Swamy had also alleged that Mr.Chidambaram was responsible for allowing Swan Telecom and Unitech, who were holding the licenses for the spectrum, to sell their shares to overseas companies.
True to form, the opposition renewed its demand that Mr.Chidambaram shall resign immediately.
Just as predictably, the Government said that the order of the CBI special Court did not amount to being an indictment of Chidambaram and that, thus, there was no reason for him to resign.
Slaman Khurshid, Union Minister for Law, said: “There is nothing in the court order that raises any questions about P Chidambaram or government. Chidambaram is a part of the government, a very valuable part of the government.”
For once, we find ourselves in agreement with the government: the order of the court as it stands is not a judgement holding Chidambaram guilty in the matter. Why can’t the opposition parties learn to talk responsibly and sensibly so that they are heard with respect?
