Portugal’s win goes in vain

Portugal finally managed to establish their first win in this edition of the world cup when they beat Ghana 2-1 in their final game in the group. Ghana, on the other hand, remained winless in spite of playing good football.

Portugal was on the verge of elimination even before the match had started for they failed to win against USA and lost badly to Germany. Yet there hopes for them as they had the Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s best player in their side. Ronaldo almost had the perfect start in the match when his nicely placed shot beat the keeper in the flight but hit the post on its way to towards the goal. Few minutes later he had his header saved from point blank range from a centre floated in from the right flank. It seemed that god of football was not on his side as he failed to score from a position where he would score even with his eyes closed. However the Portuguese found their way to take a lead at the end of first half as Ghana’s defender Boye gifted one Ronaldoown goal to them. In the 33rd minute, Boye’s attempted clearance found the back of the net to put Portugal in the lead and give them a glimmer of hope for qualification.

Portugal needed to score more goals in the second half to make sure that they made it into the next round. But quite against the run of play, Ghana restored parity through Asamoah Gyan within 15 minutes of restart. But Portugal did not give up. Ronaldo not so well supported by others single-handedly tried to score. He came close on numerous occasions but it was simply not his day. He scored finally in the 80th minute that gave Portugal their first win in this tour but that was just not enough. Had he found the net on every chances that he got the scoreline could have looked like tennis match score. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Portugal crashed out earlier than expected.
