Sania Mirza failed to grab her third Grand Slam title of her career as she lost the mixed doubles final in the Australian Open 2014. Partnering Horia Tecau of Romania Sania Mirza came close to winning her third doubles title in a grand slam only to be defeated by the Nestor-Mladenovic pair in the final. The Indo-Romanian pair lost the match 6-3, 6-2 in just 73 minutes.
The Indo-Romanian pair failed to keep up their performance against their superior partners who were yet to lose a set in the tournament. They failed to hold their serve in the first set that gave an upperhand to the French-Canadian pair in the match. In the second set as well Sania’s opponent broke them twice to finally put the match beyond any doubt. Incidentally Sania and Tecau lost to similar opponents in the quarterfinal of last year’s Wimbledon. There was no change of fortune for the unseeded Indo-Romanian pair this time as well.
Had Sania won this match, it would have Sania’s second Australian Open mixed doubles title after she had lifted the trophy with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2009. But she failed to add to that tally, though all her fans will be looking forward for similar kind of performances only with a better result in the upcoming tournaments as well.
