Prof. Saibaba arrested for having ‘Maoist Links’

Mumbai/New Delhi: Asserting him of having links to the Maoists, the Maharashtra Police arrested professor G.N. Saibaba yesterday shortly after he left for his house to have his lunch. This arrest of professor comes 10 months after he was quizzed in September last year.

Professor G. N. Saibaba is an English Professor associated with the Ram Lal Anand College. Saibaba first knocked the headlines when his name was taken up by Hem Mishra a student who was interrogated by the police. During his interrogation, Mishra told the police that he was acting as a courier between prof. Saibaba and the Maoists.

maxresdefaultThe police officials claimed that the Maoist attack of AbujMaad area was known by professor. On the suspicion of this the police surfed the house of prof. Saibaba. The police had seized a laptop,three hard-disks,four pen drives,one micro-chip and a SiM card.

On the basis of a warrant, the policemen entered the house of the Professor and in this three hours search, the police had seized certain things. According to the details available, the police had locked professor’s wife, daughter and driver inside while they were surfing his house.

When Spectralhues tried to find out more details about G.N. Saibaba, we came across a CNN IBN video where in prof. Saibaba, responding to the blames put on him said, “There is nothing wrong in keeping communication with those men though actually I have never have a chance to do that.”

Born in Andra Pradesh, G. N. Saibaba is said to be in contact with the Maoists. Publically he is known to be a professor but according to the reports, prof. Saibaba runs an organization called as Revolutionary Democratic Front. He is reportedly the deputy secretary of this very organization. Revolutionary Democratic Front is said to have link with the Maoists.

  • And now the arrest…

On Friday, at 11:45 in the morning, when prof. Saibaba left for his home, he was arrested by the police who were in civil outfits. He was arrested by the anti-naxal unit of the Maharashtra Police.

SaibabaThe Indian Express quotes prof. Saibaba’s driver: “We were on our way home when we were stopped outside the School of Open Learning by five-six men in civilian clothes. I was blindfolded and taken to the Civil Lines police station. After that, I was not allowed to see him.”

RavindraKadam, Inspector General of Police of Nagpur police confirmed the arrest of G.N. Saibaba.

Soon after his arrest his wife, Vasantha said she got a call from the Gadchiroli police informing her about his arrest. In a press conference conducted outside Saibaba’s house in New Delhi, Vasantha said that the police clandestinely arrested him.

A well-known writer/activist Arundhati Roy also came out in protest of this arrest. Arundhati Roy called this arrest as illegal. Today his relatives were supposed to protest against his arrest in front of Maharashtra Sadan.

In a statement to the Spectralhues, Ameeque Jamai, Founder Member of People Against Politics of Terror (PCPT) said, “Prof. Saibaba is an English ProfessoR. In this country, there is no respect for the intellectuals, journalists and the educated. CPI condemns such things. In the times of Law and Justice such things should not happen. The Police must immediately leave the professor.”

 The police claim that prof. Saibaba did have links with the Maoists while his wife claims that he has been harassed by the police for his opposition to the operation Green Hunt. The Government of India had launched Operation Green Hunt in 2005.
