Narendra Damodardas Modi – the vibrant and controversial Chief Minister of Gujarat has been announced Bharatiya Janata Party and NDA’s Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2014 general election.
Brushing aside veteran BJP leader LK Advani’s objection today the party president Rajnath Singh announced Modi’s name in presence of BJP’s parliamentary board members like Sushma Swaraj, Murli Manohar Joshi, Arun Jaitley and Nitin Gadkari and ended month long speculation. LK Advani skipped the meet.
Soon after BJP announced Modi’s name, Advani wrote a letter to Rajnath Singh and expressed his objection.
“This afternoon when you had come to my residence to inform me about the parliamentary board meeting, I had said something about my anguish as also my disappointment over your style of functioning,” Advani wrote.
“I had told you that I will think whether I should share my thoughts with other Board members or not. Now I have decided that it is better that I do not attend today’s meeting,” he added.
Modi, however, visited Advani at his residence to take his “blessings”.
Evoking new slogan “nayi sonch, nayi ummeed” (new thinking, new hope), the 63-year-old Modi thanked party leadership and workers for choosing him and promised he will work diligently to ensure that BJP’s win in 2014 elections.
“I assure everyone I will work hard for BJP’s victory in 2014 elections. BJP has always given me opportunity to serve the nation. The party has given an ordinary person like me a very important responsibility. I am a very small worker who comes from a very ordinary family,” Modi said.
He said BJP focus on good governance and development and battle against corruption and price rise.
Earlier in the day Modi received unceremonious support from NDA allies Shiv Sena and Shiromani Akali Dal.
