BJP demonstrations ‘worse than ULFA violence’

Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi condemned the BJP protests

Guwahati: Some leaders of the BJP in Assam were protesting against a Congress leader in the state for his offensive comments about the Human Resources Development Union Minister, Smriti Irani. While these protests took an ugly turn, there were several reports of violence and Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, was in condemnation of the demonstration, calling it ‘unparalleled in history’ and being of a poorer nature than the violence instigated by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULAF).

On the other hand, BJP leaders stated that it was merely a vigilance for justice, demanding action against the Congress leader in question. BJP’s National General Secretary tweeted, ” Gogoi govt highhanded and arrogant action in Assam. 50 BJP leaders arrested for protesting insults to Smriti Irani by a senior Cong leader.” Nilamoni Sen Deka, a former minister and currently a state legislator, had thrown some insults in Ms. Irani’s before her visit to the state on Monday.

This had provoked a mass rally by BJP in Nalbari, wherein a large audience participated and people also surrounded MR. Sen Deka’s home in Guwahati. Moreover, some protesting groups took to burning Mr.Sen Deka’s effigies. Plus, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had immediately withdrawn its weight from behind MR. Sen Deka, naming his comments as personal opinions. The BJP is waiting for a full public apology, despite the statement being taken back by the Congress Minister.

Said a senior leader of BJP Vijay Gupta, “We are going to stage the protest here (outside the residence of Mr Deka) till 3 pm today. If the Congress does not take any action against him, we are going to file a criminal case against the former minister. The Congress must prove that they respect the women of the country and we are not going to tolerate this kind of nuisance against any woman.”

However, CM Gogoi, serving his third leg in office, unwilling to relent, has even gone as far as to call the protest ‘pre-planned’, claiming that protesters broke down the gates to the Congress office. He said, “This type of terror tactic will not pay any dividend, we know how to fight back.”
