At least 68 people were killed in Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi as 10 to 15 Al-Shabaab terrorists siege this crowded shopping mall in the city on Saturday, holding hostages inside the mall.
2 Indians – Sridhar Natarajan (40) and and Paramshu Jain (8) – were also killed and more than 200 were injured in the horrifying gun battle. Over 1,000 people have been rescued so far by the Kenyan troops so far.
“The criminals are now all located in one place within the building… we have as good a chance to successfully neutralise the terrorists as we can hope for,” Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said, “Our senior diplomats are at two hospitals – MP Shah and Agah Khan. The High Commission is in touch with the locals and will assist in any way possible.”
Althogh the Kenyan officials expect that the seize will be over by tonight, but fresh gunfire sound again heard this morning from inside the Westgate shopping mall.
Somali militants group, Al-Shabaab has taken the responsibility of the attack and claimed the retaliation is for Kenya’s military intervention in Somalia.
