21 people dead as boat capsized in China

At the least, 21 people have been reported dead after a boat capsized on the Yangtze river in the eastern part of China on Thursday afternoon. The state-run news agency Xinhua reported that the vessel had 25 people on board, inclusive of eight foreign citizens, when it sank on Thursday.

Around three people were rescued by the local rescuers and the rescue operation force, while one is still reported to have been missing, as on Saturday. The 30-meter vessel named Wanshenzhou 67 was a strong boat embarked on its maiden voyage in the Fubei channel when it capsized. While four of the foreign nationals were Singaporean, the other four on board were from Japan, Malaysia, India and Indonesia.

Xinhua further reported that the boat operators had neither completed the mandatory formalities nor had the vessel’s condition been reported to the authorities.
