Cannes CountDown : The Tribe Tops Cannes Critics Week

Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy’s “The Tribe” snatched three prizes at the 53rd edition of Cannes’ Critics Week. The unique movie is told entirely through sign language, devoid of dialogue and subtitles. It won the Nespresso Grand Prize, the Revelation Prize, and the newly-launched distribution grant from the Fondation Gan.

The movie centers on a deaf and dumb young man struggling to find his place among the social hierarchy.

The SACD (French Society of Authors, Composers and Directors) prize went to Boris Lojkine’s feature debut “Hope.”

“A Ciambra,” by Jonas Carpignano won the Discovery Prize for a Short Film. “Crocodile” by Gaëlle Denis won Prix Canal for a Short Film.
