Snow Leopard Trek

Snow Leopard Trek is an epic adventure trek that one can take to find the rare and magnificent Snow Leopard in the snow capped mountains of Ladakh. Snow Leopards are generally found at an elevation of 3000-4500m of these mountains. It is not only the Snow Leopard that you can see on the trek other wildlife that you will see are Blue Sheep, Ladakh Urial and the Tibetan Argali. Some of the birds that you may see are Golden Eagle, Lammergeyer, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Himalayan Griffon and Himalayan Snow cock, Tibetan Partridge, Chukar Partridge, White Winged Redstart, Robin Accentor, White Breasted Dipper, Brown Dipper.

Location: Hemis National Park, Leh

Temperature: Temperature can vary from -20 Degrees Celsius to -35 Degree Celsius.

Best time for trek: July to October

Duration of Trek: 8-9 Days

How to reach:

By Air: Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport in Leh the closest airport.

By Rail: The nearest railway station in Leh-Ladak is Jammu Tawai in Jammu, about 690 km away.

By Road: Many trained trekkers prefer going on Bikes to Leh-Ladak.

Trek Details: Snow Leopard Trek starts from Hemis National Park. From there trek to Husing-which is a junction of major Snow Leopard Corridor and the cats. From Husing Camp take an half an hour trek to Zinchen village and then to a high trek to Tarbung Nala where there are more Elusive Snow Leopards. The trek is till evening and everyone has to return to the base camp in the evening. Daily scouting is done to track the mystic cats in these mountains. Other areas to trek are Lato Nala, Tarbung Nala and Rumbak Village.  Some of the birds to spot at Hemis National Park are golden eagles, Eurasian eagle owls, Himalayan griffons, Himalayan snow cocks, white winged redstarts, robin accentors, white-breasted dippers, and brown dippers.

Places to see: Some of the paces to visit while in Ladakh are Lingshed village, Lingshed Solar School, Frozen Confluence of Zanskar & Indus, Karsha ,Thiksey, Hemis and Shey Monasteries.

Travel Tips:

  • Carry lot of warm clothes
  • Trek is tedious and on heavy snow mountains, if you are novice the trek is not for you.
  • Give your body 1-2 day rest and use to the climate before starting the trek.
  • Carry with you proper medication for the trek
  • Do not go to trek without a travel guide.
