Roopkund Trek

If you are a trekker and have not been to Roopkund Trek, then you are really missing out something in your Trek adventures. Situated at the base of Trishul Peak, Roopkund is located on a popular pilgrim route and is a part of popular “Nanda Devi JatYatra”. Also known as the ‘Mystery Lake” or “Skeleton Lake” this is very infamous for being the graveyard of over 5000 skeletons.

The Roopkund trek takes you through the magnificent Himalayas with a view of scenic snow-capped mountains, lakes & forests. The Roopkund Trek beings from the base camp at Lohajang and takes at least 5 days to reach the Mystery Lake. The view of Roopkund Lake is the highest view point of the trek. In summers when Ice melts, one can see the skeletons floating on the surface of the Roopkund Lake. These mysterious skeletons were first reported in 1942.

The Roopkund Trek also offers thrilling view of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul and highest meadows-the Ali Bugyal and BedniBugyal.

Best Time to Visit: The Roopkund Trek is conducted 3 times in a year – May, Mid June and September.

How to Reach:

By Road: Take the direct bus from Rishikesh to Mundoli/Lohajung

By Air: Pantnagar Airport which is 240km south of Lohajang is the nearest airport.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Kathgodam Railway station

Trek Route: Roopkund Treak beings from Lohajung and goes through many Himalayan Frests, brooks and meadows to Roopkund Lake.

Places to visit:Jageshwar which is the 12thJyotirlingas in India.

Travel Tips:

  • One has to be physically fit to be able to complete this trek
  • Take good trekking shoes for the trek as being winter and leaves on the grounds it might be slippery.
  • Lot of warm clothes, jackets and wind shelter
  • Sun glasses to protect from UV rays
  • Carry LED torch with extra batteries
  • Carry your personal medicine kit and first aid kit
