The NIT campus in Jammu and Kashmir’s capital city Srinagar, that saw strikes and clashes just the previous week among the students after India exited the T20 World Cup, has become a high-tension zone again. This comes in as the students there are being lathi-charged by the police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to guard the campus premises during the night.
Reportedly, students who were not natives of the state were seen to be heading for the main gate, on Tuesday evening, strongly asking for the examinations to be postponed, when they were hit with batons and sticks by the police. The police, in their statement to the press, claimed that approximately no less than 500 students were staging the protest by moving out of the main campus, which undoubtedly had to be curbed. If sources are to be believed, they were protesting by carrying the Tricolour. The mob also had armed themselves with stones, resulting into injuries to many.

BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister of the state Nirmal Singh stated that the day’s troubles were not over yet and that it was more of an examination issue and not ‘insider-outsider’. The situation at the campus, Mr Singh adding further said, “is normal now”.
Earlier named as the Regional Engineering College (REC), the NIT has approximately 2,500 students and a huge score of staff members. A vast majority of the student populace comes from outside the state.
