Netherlands makes it to the semis

netherlands2 Netherlands became the last nation to qualify for the last four in the world cup 2014 as they beat Costa Rica on penalties last night. Tim Krul put up an outstanding show under the bar in the shoot-out to eclipse a brilliant display from Kaylor Navas in the rest of the match that aided the Costa Ricans to take the match into the penalties.

A lot was expected from the match as two better teams of this world cup faced each other in the final quarterfinal match of this edition of the tournament. But it could not live up to the expectations as both teams denied making all out attacks in fear of conceding one. Like the other three quarterfinals it seemed that one goal might settle the issue but that was not to happen as neither team managed to score in regulation time. Netherlands came close as they hit the post twice. Even in the 30 minutes extra time the both set of players failed to break the deadlock and finally it was up to the keepers to decide the end result.

netherlands1In the tie-breaker Netherlands was capable of scoring in all four penalties they had to take. Robin Van Persie opened the scoring for the Dutch followed by Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt. Costa Rica, on the other hand failed to score twice in their five opportunities and it was after a long time that a team lost even after taking the first shot in the shoot-out. Brian Ruiz and Umana had their attempts saved by Tim Krul as Netherlands emerged winner in the penalties by a scoreline of 4-3.

Holland is now up against Argentina in the second semifinal. That match will surely be a scorcher as Argentina had it fairly easy against Belgium earlier in the night. Netherlands although failed to score in the regulation time never felt like losing it. As we approach the business end of the tournament the teams are looking to give their best which ensures an exciting week of football ahead.
