Bayern reach the quarters

Bayern Munich beat Arsenal in

Arsenal became the first English casualty in the UEFA Champions League 2013-14 when Bayern Munich defeated them 3-1 on aggregate. The second leg in the tie ended in a stalemate with both the teams locked at 1 goal each; but Bayern qualified as they led the tie 2-0 after the first leg at the Emirates.

Arsenal v FC Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League Round of 16

Coming to Munich trailing 0-2 in the tie the Gunners were looking for a repeat of last year’s performance when they beat the German giants in their own backyard only to see themselves going out on away goals. This time round they did put up a spirited show but could not manage to overcome the 2-0 deficit. The first half went goalless with both teams trying to avoid conceding any goal. Within 10 minutes of the restart after the lemon break Bayern drew first blood through Bastian Schweinsteiger who converted Frank Ribery’s cross on the 54th minute. Arsenal hit back hard as they responded almost immediately through Lukas Podolski in the 57th minute. With the match tied at 1-1, it was not looking good for the Gunners and eventually they bowed out of the tournament despite a resilient effort at the Allianz Arena.
