A minor explosion at the Belur Math temple create panic amongst the disciples. According to the police, there were no injuries or major damages to the property. Initial reports state that it was just a firecracker that exploded just before the evening prayers.
“We think that it was just a fire cracker. No sign of any bomb has been found yet. An FIR has been lodged for creating mischief and under sections of the Explosives Act,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Howrah Nishat Pervez.
The people present inside the premises said that the explosion was heard from the shoe stall. The glass counters cracked due to the explosion. Some locals claim that there were two explosions.
Police officials suspect that this explosion is a case of mischief. “The CCTV footage of the temple is being examined,” Mr. Pervez said.
So far, no arrests have been made.
This incident caused great panic and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the senior officials of the Ramakrishna Mission order.
Security has been tightened and increased in the premises after the incident. To guard the temple, police protection along with the Belur Math’s private security has been started.
The Belur Math is located in West Bengal’s Howrah district. It is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission.
