Rahul Gandhi calls for 21-century Congress party

The much-awaited Rahul Gandhi speech at the crucial AICC meet finished with positive note.

Rahul Gandhi at AICC meetThe Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi addressed the jubilant party workers and tried his best to energize them before 2014 Lok Sabha polls, in New Delhi on Friday.

Praising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his commendable job for the last ten years, Rahul Gandhi requested him to subsidies 12 LPG per year to each household instead of 9.

“In the last 10 years, Congress has done unmatched transfer of power to the people of this country,” Rahul said.

Rahul tried to push party’s anti-corruption agenda by reminding the workers that it is Congress which gifted crucial Right to Information (RTI) Act to the country. He said congress continuously trying to empowering the people of the country. Rahul emphasized to pass the six remaining anti-corruption bills in the parliament in the next two months.

“We have six bills in Parliament. These bills will transform fight against corruption. We have to ensure opposition does not stall parliament,” Rahul said.

Taking a dig at BJP and its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Rahul said, “Opposition does not know and read history as the Congress is not a party but a vision which resides in every heart,” adding “Democracy cannot be ruled by dictatorship. It cannot be ruled by one man, it has to be run by elected representatives.”

“Opposition they want a Congress-free India, but they aren’t aware of the history of our country. They have no knowledge about history. Congress party is an ideology and this lies in our heart. Congress is not a party, it’s a mindset. Congress reflects our culture, our tradition,” Rahul said.

Hitting out at the BJP and AAP, Rahul said, they are good in marketing but they are not honest.

“It is good in marketing themselves as they earlier sold comb to bald people and now they can give them a haircut,” Rahul said.

Wooing the common man and women, Rahul said Congress will work for them.

manmohan singh and sonia gandhi at AICC meet“I want common people should be able to walk into the political system. We need to ensure they can come into politics at ease. Today we live in a world where packaging and selling politics replaces the essence of politics,” Rahul said.

“We need to give more representation to women in politics. I want women reservation Bill to be passed in Parliament. I want half congress members as women,” he added.

Admitting that 2014 Lok Sabha election would be a tough battle Rahul said, “2014 is tough battle and we will go with our head held high and fight with everything we have. We will not lose courage and will not stop till the battle is won.”

“It is a turning point in our lives. The impetus on how and when to change,” he added.

Explaining why the party is reluctant in naming him the prime ministerial candidate, Rahul said Congress goes by the constitution of the country and the prime minister will be chosen by the elected representatives.

“The prime minister will be chosen according to the Constitution and will be elected by the MPs. I am your soldier and will do whatever you ask for.”

Perhaps this was Rahul’s strongest political speech ever and was directly pointing towards the heart of the Congressmen. The speech was mainly orchestrated for the party meet and for the party workers, but somewhere fell short of delivering a vision which many people would have wanted to hear. Whether Rahul’s speech is too little too late or will it galvanised Congress members, well, time will only tell.
