Jammu and Kashmir under Governor’s rule

The union home ministry on Friday recommended Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir after political parties failed to reach decision to form the government.

Soon after the Home Minister Rajnath Singh had received J&K Governor NN Vohra’s status report on the government formation and former chief minister Omar Abdullah stepped down from being the caretaker chief minister on Thursday, the home ministry had recommended Governor’s rule in the state.

Jammu and Kashmir had given a fractured mandate in the recently concluded polls with PDP emerges as single largest party with 28 seats. BJP secured 25 seats and National Conference managed to get 15 and Congress won 12 seats.

At first it was speculated that BJP would form the government with the help from NC or PDP and easily touch the magic number of 44 in the 87-member state Assembly. However, the talks failed. And even Congress’ wish to form a grand alliance with both NC and PDP was rejected.
