The government on Thursday defended it decision of sacking Mizoram governor Kamla Beniwal following allegations of misusing office.
Rejecting opposition allegations of “vendetta politics”, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said there was no politics behind the action.
“Action was taken within rules, as per Constitution. There are serious allegations. The government has taken serious note of her conduct,” Venkaiah Naidu said.
Opposition parties led by Congress today hit out at BJP for sacking Beniwal as she had differences with Narendra Modi when he was Gujarat Chief Minister.
Congress leader Manish Tewari said, “She was first transferred in a cavalier manner to a northeastern state and then removed. Governors are constitutional authorities. They cannot be trampled upon or trifled with like this.”
“This is a violation of not only the Supreme Court judgement but also the Constitution. The Home Minister must explain as to why Kamla Beniwal was removed. Governors are constitutional authorities and cannot be trifled with,” Tewari added.
Quoting 2010 Supreme Court, NCP leader Sharad Pawar said, “Change in government at the Centre is not a ground for removal of Governors to make way for others favoured by the new government.”
The Janata Dal United leader Ali Anwar said, “It is clearly vindictive action, they are taking revenge,” said JDU.
According to the reposts former Congress minister Kamla Beniwal had misused her office to repeatedly fly to her home town in Jaipur in Rajasthan at taxpayers’ money and involved in financial activities to gain personally. The sources claim that the probed by both the Gujarat and Rajasthan government proved the allegations and reports have been sent to Home Ministry.
