Al-Qaeda – a threat to India?

Before Three years; yes, exactly before three years, the United States had triumphed, as it declared the death of Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden. And three years later, we have Ayman al-Zawahiri making a truly shocking revelation. Ayman Al-Zawahiri, the current Al-Qaeda chief, on 4th September announced that the terror group is opening its divisions in Indian subcontinent.

In a 55 minutes video only and only Al-Zawahiri is seen, saying that the opening of this new branch is meant to revive Jihadi activity in a region that was once part of the land of Muslims, until infidel enemy occupied, fragmented and split it. Al-Zawahiri then goes on to tell the Muslims in Burma, Bangladesh, Assam, Gujarat and in the Kashmiri region that your brothers in the terror group have not forgotten you and that they are doing what they can to salvage you.

In the video, according to a Bloomberg report, Al-Zawahiri is seen and heard saying: “Oh, our Muslim nation in the Indian sub-continent! Support your Mujahedeen brothers with your opinion and advice, and money, equipment and prayer and follow the procession of Jihad.”

We can call it an appeal and simultaneously a method to brainwash people, can’t we? Because even a layman can figure out that these claims are made so as to attract others towards the organization.

Al-Qaeda’s rival terror group Islamic State is doing nothing other than using the same method to persuade people to join their organization. There are reports that some Indians have fallen into this trap by joining the ISIS terror group.

They want people to fight; they want people to pick up arms and ammunitions. And by doing this, all they want is to secure their motives and accomplish their goals.

The fresh claims made by Al-Qaeda chief Al-Zawahiri pose serious threats to India though the United States feels otherwise. The Economic Times quoted Caitlin Hayden, Spokesperson of the National Security Council at the White House saying: “We don’t regard the announcement as an indication of new capabilities by al-Qaeda, which has long been active throughout the region. We have seen the reports of Al-Qaeda’s new branch on the Indian sub-continent. The US remains committed to dismantling al-Qaeda and ensuring that it never again poses a threat to the American people.”

Al-Qaeda:
Al-Qaeda is a terror group active in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The terror organization has carried several attacks including the September 11 attack, 1998 U.S. embassy bombings and the 2002 Bali bombings.

Osama Bin Laden, the then leader of Al-Qaeda was killed on 2nd May, 2011 in a U.S operation at Abbottabad in Pakistan. His body was carried to Afghanistan for confirmation and he was buried there within 24 hours of his death.

After the death of Bin Laden, Saif al-Abdel served as an interim commander. But soon, on 16th June 2011, Al-Qaeda made an official announcement declaring Ayman al-Zawahiri as its chief. Prior to taking over as the leader, Zawahiri was Deputy Operations Chief of Al-Qaeda.

bsfOn the Border:
Since some weeks, ceasefires are being violated at India-Pakistan border. Reports claim that Pakistan army is hand in glove with Lashkar-e-Taiba in this ceasefire. Indian Express carried a report on 24th August that quoted BSF DG D K Pathak saying, “Our trans-border sources have confirmed that two of the three persons killed in Sialkot in retaliatory fire by the BSF were LeT cadres. Everyday, there is an attempt to infiltrate from across the border.”

Let’s not forget that Lashkar-e-Taiba is an ally of Al-Qaeda. And Al-Qaeda chief has made revelations of opening a wing in India. It is possible that LeT might help them in this task and perhaps that is the reason why they are trying to infiltrate India.

The Border Security Force has also confirmed that three armed militants were spotted close to India border on three occasions. The BSF said it was giving a befitting reply to the firings. Home Ministry has also instructed the force to include retaliatory actions.

According to BSF chief, the only reason why Pakistan is firing, violating the ceasefire at the border is to let the terrorists infiltrate. There is something on the minds of these terrorists; perhaps a big plane. Whenever, Pakistan is blamed for aiding terrorists, it simply denies. Their representatives and diplomats who appear on Indian television debates too deny these charges.

Anyways, for now the Home Ministry has asked the Intelligence Bureau to verify the reality of the video and claims made by Ayman al-Zawahiri. The nation needs to be on high alert, especially airports, railway stations and all other public places. Our security forces need to be vigilant as thorough and tight security is the need of the hour.
