BlackMoney: Centre submits sealed envelope to SC; SIT to investigate

In a sealed envelope, the government of India submitted 3 sets of documents, comprising 627 names, to the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The Supreme Court has sent these sealed envolped to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which has been instituted for investigations in the issue of Black Money.

Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi who submitted the envelope of the documents to the Supreme Court told NDTV that these HSBC accounts will be assessed for any tax violations by March 31, 2015.

The sealed envelope was not opened in the Supreme Court and it has sent it  black-moneydirectly to the SIT, giving the team’s Chairman and Vice Chairman the authority to unseal the envelope. The SIT will now carry on its investigations into this issue. The court has asked SIT to submit a status report of its investigations by the end of November. It has also said that it is the SIT which will decide what further actions have to be taken on the issue of black money.

Mixed reactions have been pouring in on this development. Spectralhues is quoting these statements as told to ANI.

Majeed Memon of the NCP said: “Centre is trying to avoid responsibility, SC is the last hope of nation and democracy.”

Mohandas Pai said, “Good development, but government should have submitted names immediately after coming to power. Govt. did not manage it properly, created a lack of confidence in SC’s attitude towards govt.”

Manish Tiwari, leader of the Congress Party said, “BJP should recover all black money and distribute it among the nation as they claimed. Legal dimension would be monitored by SC, there is moral dimension also to matter.”

BJP spokesperson Sambhit Patra said, “The intention of both BJP and Central Govt is to bring back black money and declare names. Govt had already submitted names to SC constituted SIT, intention of Govt. is absolutely clear.”

Social activist Anna Hazare who had launched a campaign against black money said, “If they fail to bring back black money, people of the nation will have to resort to a movt. Modiji and his party assured people to bring back money in 100 days, 150 days have passed.”

Senior Lawyer Ram Jethmalani who is tracking this issue from the beginning said: “hey have to give the names to SIT, investigation should not be left to officers or Govt.It is a great development but the credit goes to SC not the Finance Ministry or AG.”

CPI’s Sitaram Yechury said, “BJP’s hidden agenda is payback time for corporates who supported them during campaigning.”

On twitter too, many tweeted their views on this development.

Kiran Bedi tweeted: “SC may also be required to make available adequate resources for SIT to verify and investigate so that prosecution+return of money be initiated!With SIT of retd SC judges,overseen by SC,having d list of probable defaulters,will stand prosecuted..New Hope is future nexuses will weaken.”

Kiran Bedi also tweeted: “Confidentiality clauses are framed by the rich to protect the rich! SC is finally questioning this and wanting to remove this umbrella.”

Jayprakash Narayan, Founder of Loksatta Party tweeted: “The SC case on black money and the intense public scrutiny are good for India. Now there cannot be fears of a cover up.”
