14 arrested in AAP-BJP clashes

After yesterday’s notorious street fight between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP, the Delhi police has arrested fourteen AAP members for inciting violence in front of BJP headquarters in New Delhi. Also an FIR has been launched against senior AAP leaders Ashutosh and Shazia Ilmi for rioting and instigating violence.

28 people were injured from both parties in the fight.

“All those identifiable and present at the protest site have been named in the FIR,” a senior Delhi Police official told reporters.

Police have termed the AAP protest completely illegal as no prior permission was sought in this connection by the party.

The incident took place after the police have briefly stopped Arvind Kejriwal’s movement in Gujarat for questioning his plans according to the model code of conduct. Few minutes later he was allowed to go. But with the news of Kejriwal’s alleged detention, a few hundred AAP workers led by Ashutosh and Shazia Ilmi went to BJP headquarters in Delhi and started protesting there. BJP leaders have claimed that in retaliation they took action. However, the TV footages show both the parties were throwing stones, bricks at each other. BJP supporters were seen throwing chairs to the AAP members from their party office.  

The street fights also took place in Lucknow and Allahabad later in the evening.

Arvind Kejriwal apologized for the incident but blamed BJP for instigating violence.   

“I am sorry for the mistakes committed by the AAP workers. They should not have resorted to violence on my detention,” he said.

“I urge all volunteers not to raise their hand n to stay calm n non-violent. U shud be prepared to lay down ur life but never raise hand,” Arvind Kejriwal wrote in Twitter.

BJP’s president Rajnath Singh condemned the incident and said AAP is undemocratic.

 “I strongly condemn the AAP’s violent protest at the gates of BJP office today in Delhi. It shows AAP’s undemocratic and anarchist character,” he wrote in twitter.
