There is one interesting conclusion one can draw from these statistics. That the sale of the most popular and least expensive cars have all dipped considerably while the sales of the more expensive ones have gone up (even though the growth is not much) suggests that the less affluent have been rather badly affected by the economy.

Is it just as possible that more people from the less affluent sections have turned more affluent and have thus bought more expensive cars (leading to lower sales in the less expensive segment and more in the more expensive segment)? Tempting though this alternative conclusion is (particularly to our politicians and “sarkari” economists), the ground realities of daily life suggest otherwise.

We are inclined to stick to our morbid, doomsday view for the present.
