Sri Lankans Protest Ruling Against Chief Justice

The Srilankan parliamentary committee’s ruling that the country’s Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake is not fit to to hold the office because of her unexplained wealth and misuse of power has met with protest from hundreds of Sri Lankan citizens demanding that the impeachment process against Justice Bandaranayake be stopped immediately.

Sri Lankans Protest Ruling Against Chief JusticeThe protesting citizens, lawyers, rights activitsts etc carried placards that read “Restore sovereignty of judiciary “and “Let’s rise against this era of anarchy.”

Saman Rathnapriya, a trade union leader, demanded that the impeachment process be stopped in order to “restore independence of judiciary and country’s democracy.”

The impeachment process has been a cause of concern internationally and has been viewed as an effort to subdue judiciary and a reflection of the deteriorating political scenario within Sri Lanka.
