2014: A Ghastly Year

Be it for Mexico, USA or China; or Russia, Pakistan, Iraq, Israel, India, Australia, Canada – the year 2014 has genuinely been a disquiet and restless year.

2014 had two incidents which captured more attention- the Israel-Gaza conflict and turmoil created by ISIS in the Middle East.

As summers departed, clouds of conflict appeared over Israel and Gaza, as two nations turned into an open battleground, bringing life to a halt and leading to tremendous amount of destruction in both the nations – but comparatively more in Gaza. The battle witnessed huge loss of life and terrible economic and social damage.

On the other hand, the Islamic State got into full swing in Iraq and Syria by capturing major locations and posing a serious threat to the world security. The terror group shook the word by ruthlessly and mercilessly murdering hostages.

As the Middle East witnessed ISIS, Nigeria witnessed Boko Haram, which kidnapped more than 600 girls from a school, most of who continue to remain missing. Deadly disease Ebola also became the talking point as it began taking lives in the African countries.

For Malaysian Airlines, 2014 has been an extremely difficult and problematic year. Earlier March, Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, mysteriously went missing, in the aftermath of which several theories regarding its sudden disappearance made rounds. And as Malaysian Airlines was recurring from this peculiar tragedy, its MH17 flight crashed down, having being shot, in Ukraine, close to Russia-Ukraine border, killing all the 283 passengers and 15 crew members on board.

Ferguson witnessed violence as protests erupted against racism, and pro-democracy movement rocked the streets of China. Clashes erupted between protestors and police forces, and off lately, police cleared a protesting site. Tension had mounted over the Pakistani government as huge protests had erupted against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The protest called in by some leaders of opposition had reached at its peak in the month of August.

In Mexico, development in the case of Missing Students distressed parents and citizens, as the arrested gang members confessed to have murdered all the 43 students.

Besides all this, terror struck Canada. Its parliament was attacked by terrorists. Sydney and Peshawar too, witnessed traumatizing acts of terror. Soon after Sydney’s café siege made headlines, Peshawar school attack led to rallies and protests across many countries.

By and large, 2014 has been a really ghastly and upsetting year. Conflicts took lives, protests led to instability and terror traumatized people. But now, as 2014 is coming to an end and people are gearing to welcome 2015, all that we can hope, is peace and harmony restores back in the world. May the coming year be peaceful, pacific and placatory for every nation in this world.
