Electric ‘Go Green’ bus service for MPs now

As Prime Minister Modi cut the ribbon at the launch of the ‘Go Green’ bus services on Monday, he emphasized on the fact that there is growing concern about the deteriorating environment in the world. The electric-powered bus service, inaugurated primarily for Members of Parliament for the time being, was gifted to the Parliament by the Road Ministry, which has plans to gift another such bus later on.

The Road Ministry has also given the green signal to plans that will convert several normal city buses onto battery powered buses. Although the manufactured buses are currently using imported and expensive Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, it plans to spend on developing other, stronger batteries, with a higher power range at lower prices. The bus can accommodate 15 commuters and in comparison to a general fuel-operated bus, the electric bus produces next to no pollutants. On the other hand, fuelled buses produce 600 kilograms of nitrous oxide, 300 kilograms of carbon monoxide and 12 kilograms of particulate matter year after year.

The encouraging Prime Minister, who has recently been part of the Climate Change summit in Paris, said,” MPs will benefit from it. New generation can come forward in ‘Start up India’ and ‘Stand up India and contribute to initiatives like making batteries.” Referring to the rapidly declining quality of air across the country, especially in the capital city of New Delhi, the Prime Minister was quick to bring forth the endless dialogue that has taken place for several years on pollution. However, he added, it is now that the real, negative impact of pollution on everyday life is being felt and seen. He commented, “”There is a challenge before the mankind to find a solution to this problem.”

PM Modi, in addition, advocated the use of green energy sources like solar power, as a result of the revelations that came into light at the CoP-21 Summit in Paris, wherein the USA, France and India together have taken an initiative to develop green technologies. The program created, that is, the Mission Innovation, formed with aid from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation aims especially to create a Solar Alliance between countries with abundant sunlight.
