German automaker BMW has launched its flagship high-end hybrid sports car i8 in India at Rs.2.29 crore.
The first hybrid car from its sub-brand BMW I, the i8 is now available in its Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai’s showroom.
“The car was showcased in New Delhi as a concept car four years ago. These vehicles have been designed since 2007 as ‘Project i’ — sustainable mobility solutions. This iconic change is inevitable,” BMW Group India President Philipp von Sahr said during the launch ceremony.
“Most futuristic technologies used in the BMW i8 are already implemented in current BMW models in some form or other that enable enhanced performance and lower emissions,’’ he added.
The BMW i8 comes with combination of an electric motor and a petrol engine. While the electric drive, powered by a 96 kW (131 hp) lithium-ion battery, is located on the front axle, the 1.5 litre three-cylinder petrol engine powered by BMW TwinPower with 170 kW (231 hp) is located in the rear.
The car can reach up to120 kilometres per hour (kmph) on battery power and 250 kmph on electric motor and the average fuel consumption is at 47.45 km a litre.
