Captain Lakshmi Sehgal Of Netaji’s ‘Azad Hind Fauj’ Passed Away

The first captain of Rani of Jhansi Regiment, the women’s wing of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj or Indian National Army, Captain Lakshmi Sehgal died today in Kanpur due to heart attack. She was 97.

Lakshmi Swaminathan Sehgal born in a Tamil brahmin family in 1914. Before joining Netaji’s INA she was a doctor and practiced in Singapore in 1940. She became captain of Jhansi Rani Laxmi Bai Regiment.

She was member of CPM and of Parliament. Lakshmi Sehgal fought 2002 presidential election Left Front candidate against APJ Abdul Kalam which she lost.
