Sonia Gandhi takes on Modi govt in parliament

Congress President Sonia Gandhi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for talking trash about the previous governments during his visit to Canada.

“This outrageous remark on foreign soil belittles the dignity of the office he holds and is an embarrassment to the nation,” said Sonia Gandhi. “Abroad, our country is being criticized and this has happened for the first time,” she said.

“Such petty behavior does not define us. We in the Congress party are proud of our record and we will continue to fight with conviction for our ideology, programmes and policies, and for the future of our country as we always have,” she added.

“My mission is to turn scam India to skill India.” Modi said, when he addressed the NRIs in Toronto. “My job is to ensure that India is cleaned up. It will take time to clean up the mess of the past,” he added.

In the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday, Sonia Gandhi attacked the government for not being open about their way of functioning. “Government is setting out to systematically subvert the functioning of the RTI Act,” she said.

She also blamed Prime Minister Modi for not appointing a Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). She said,”In a blatant U-turn, his (Modi) government, through absence of CIC has made sure that highest offices aren’t accountable under RTI Act. During UPA, the post of CIC was never vacant in the past decade.”

She charged them for showing no interest in fighting against corruption. “Government has shown a deplorable lack of interest in punishing people responsible for delays in public services. And Madam Speaker, information delayed is information denied. This is simply not acceptable. Government must match its word of fighting corruption with their actions,” Sonia said.

She says that the Prime Minister is running a one man show at the Centre and that all powers have been centered around the PMO. Other ministers have no real authority or power, she says.

She took a dig at a few BJP leaders who had previously praised and lauded Nathuram Godse, who killed Mahatma Gandhi.

“Those who murdered Gandhiji are being praised,” said Sonia referring to those leaders.

She credited the government for being ignorant about the situation of the farmers. “What do they deserve credit for? They deserve credit for the the most anti-farmer legislative amendments to our Land Acquisition Bill. They deserve credit for ignoring the severe plight of farmers throughout the country in a show of callous unconcern that has never been seen before.” she said.

“They deserve credit for creating the most centralised government in India’s recent history. Ministers hardly matter. Even the bureaucrats, who are supposedly empowered, feel paralysed because all key files are pending in the PMO for decision,” she added.

In conclusion, she said,” Friends, the challenge to us is very clear. We are faced with a government, which assaults everything precious that India and the Congress stands for. We must take the fight for and expose this government on its other sins of omission and commission.”
