Orkut: Bidding Adieu

“Let me go check if i have a new scrap!”

“Omg! A new testimonial.”

Orkut days will be gone soon and forever.

Do you remember those days when we used to come back from school and hurriedly have our lunch just to switch on the Internet and check what’s happening on orkut?

The first ever social media platform for us and we already loved it. Of course there were many other sites, but none like it.

So what was your first reaction when you came to know that orkut will bid an adieu soon?

google orkutDid it bring back memories or was it just another news for you?

Facebook was flooded with the news and there were all kinds of status updates. People logged in to their Orkut accounts just to take a backup of memories out there.

We wonder how many people met on Orkut and later got married. How many new friendships did Orkut give birth to.

It happened in 2004 and after 10 long years it will get erased from the list of social network. Google has announced to take it down on 30th September 2014. If you haven’t backed up your memories, you still have time.

Orkut lost its popularity in 2007, when Facebook (2005) became the new craze. That is the sole reason of shutting it down. It played well only in India and Brazil, and failed to gain popularity in other parts of the world.

“Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell,” Google said in a post on the Orkut blog.

Google also said that it would preserve an archive of all Orkut communities that will be available from September 30. If you don’t want your posts or name to be included in the community archive, you can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account.

As we bid farewell to the father of Social Media, lets look at some funny things we did on orkut:

-Cool profile pics which meant Bollywood hunks for boys and puppies or teddy bears for girls.

-We strived hard to write the coolest bio to impress our profile visitors.

-Each one of us have stalked our friends’ scraps to check out their conversations.

-Deleting scraps that we did not want anyone to read and avoid embarrassment.

-Putting up picture of a monkey and tagging friends.

-Changing themes every single day.

-Lets confess, we all have begged our friends to write a testimonial for us. Just for others to read.

I have been doing crazy stuff like selling off the current iPhone to get the latest launch-to-buying gadgets that I might never use. It’s all about satisfaction and sending your curiosity bug to sleep & prepare it to pop up with full energy the next time it hears about something new.
