Gulzar to get prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award

Renowned film director, lyricist and poet Gulzar will be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2013 for his outstanding contribution to the Indian cinema.
The ministry of information and broadcasting announced on Saturday that Gulzar saab will receive India’s highest honour bestowed on a cinema personality.

Padma Bhushan awardee Gulzar has received numerous awards in his over 50 years career. He has also received Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He has won 5 National Awards and 20 Filmfare Awards. He won Oscar in 2010 for Best Original Song for the film Slumdog Millionaire. He also received Grammy Award in 2010.

The 79-year-old Gulzar has started his filmy career as lyricist of the cult song ‘Mora gora rang layee le’ for Bimal Roy’s classic Bandini in 1963. Gulzar’s first directorial movie was Mere Apne in 1971. He has directed many classics including Aandhi, Parichay,Koshish, Khushboo, Mausam, Maachis, Kinara, Angoor and Ijaazat.

Gulzar has worked with many leading music directors in Bollywood like Sachin Dev Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Shankar Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Rajesh Roshan, Anu Malik, and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, however he is best known for his association with  Rahul Dev Burman who he called an anchor in his life.

Gulzar has also contributed to small screen with non-fiction series like “Mirza Ghalib” and “Tahreer Munshi Premchand Ki”. He wrote popular lyrics for “Hello Zindagi”, “Potli Baba Ki” and “Jungle Book”.

Reacting to the news Megna Gulzar, daughter of Gulzar, has tweeted, “Dadasaheb Phalke award for my father. So proud!”
