Maardani 2: Review

Shivani Shivaji Roy -the protagonist and Sunny – the antagonist – let the faceoff begin!

Cast: Rani Mukerji, Vishal Jethwa
Director: Gopi Puthran
Ratings: ***

This 2014 sequel already has a pre-set backdrop – Shivani Shivaji Roy (Rani Mukerji) – the straightforward, fearless policewoman is back in action as an IPS officer switching cities from Mumbai to Kota. Now, she has to deal with a 21 years old young, hazel-eyed psycho rapist and murderer Sunny (Vishal Jethwa). This rapist creates menace on screen with heinous crimes of not only raping females but also brutally killing them and discarding their bodies into unrecognizable corpses.

Director Gopi Puthran creates a stage for 105 minutes wherein the no non-sense lady cop Shivani chases the culprit and brings him out in light highlighting his troubled past. Sunny hates girl who protests, voice their own opinions and live on their own terms. His emotional disorder is well captured when he speaks mostly to the camera and shares his course of ruthless acts and dangerous plans. He is asthmatic and depends mostly on inhaler pumps to survive and sustains himself by working under a local gangster.

Shivani Shivaji Roy, as the town’s new Superintendent of Police, must track this villain out! In the process, she faces a lot of criticism and was at the verge of getting transferred to a different location just because she is indomitable and keeps her duty first before her gender.

Both actors – Rani and Vishal have delivered their best. Rani’s acting prowess is commendable as usual. Even if she goes off screen, her return is marked with vengeance. The newcomer Vishal Jethwa deserves mention here. He, at places, outshines Rani, as both characters are equally strong. The cat and mouse chase needs to be watched to feel the disgust, anger, pain and the adrenaline gush even our nation is also undergoing now with the rapists’ death in the Hyderabad police encounter.

As audience, I felt we wanted more of Shivani and some more of Sunny onscreen, the case got resolved soon. We could have easily invested another 15-20 minutes witnessing more of the true picture of dirty politics, and misuse of power by men in such positions. However, Maardani 2 is worth a watch, it is real, it is disturbing. The film gets a deserving 3 out of 5 stars!!
