Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was conferred with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, by President Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bahavan on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old retired cricketing genius became the first sportsman to be awarded with this honour.
In his over 24 years career Tendulkar broke and made lots of records. He retired after playing unprecedented 200th Test against the West Indies in Mumbai on November last year. The former India Captain has earlier conferred with Padma Vibhushan too. Tendulkar is also the first active sportsperson to become a Rajya Sabha member.
Along with Sachin, eminent scientist and the Head of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, Prof CNR Rao was also awarded with Bharat Ratna today.
The 79-year-old Prof Rao is internationally acclaimed scientist whose contribution to solid state and materials chemistry has been recognized globally. The Padma Vibhushan recipient, Prof CNR Rao has written 45 books and more than 1,400 research papers of his have been published in different international magazines.
