Bhagalpur the second largest city of Bihar has a history that is as old as Ramayana and Mahabharata. In those days it was known as the Kingdom of Anga that flourished till the 6th century when it was taken over by Magadha.

The two centuries old art of sericulture and silk weaving industry has ensured that Tussar Silk and Tussar Saree are revered world over. This has made Bhagalpur to be known as the silk city of India. The Silk Institute also happens to be located in this town.

Trade flourished even in the 7th century when the Chinese travelers Hsüan-tsang and Fa-HienIt recorded Bhagalpur as a flourishing and biggest trade centers in Eastern India. Even at that time it had its own port called Champanagar, for trading along the Ganges River.

In a recent discovery not only coins but even boats from the Middle and Far east were excavated. Bhagalpur now is even connected by rail and road network.

Fresh water Dolphins called Gangetic Dolphins are found in abundance in the Ganga Basin. Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is also established near the town. Gangetic Dolphins have been declared as the National aquatic animal of India.

Patna airport is the nearest airport to Bhagalpur. The distance between Patna airport to Bhagalpur city almost 235 Km. Buses, private cars and trains are available from the airport to reach Bhagalpur city.

• By Train

Bhagalpur Railway station is one of the busiest rail stations in Bihar. Many trains are available from Patna Junction to reach Bhagalpur in about 5 hours. Gauge Loop line of the Eastern railway also running through Bhagalpur.

• By Road

Bhagalpur is connected with National Highway 31 and National Highway 81. There are regular bus services between Patna and Bhagalpur. The distance between the two cities are approx 437 km and it would take around 7 hours to reach Bhagalpur from Patna. Most bus services are overnight and fare is around Rs.450 per person. Private cars are also available from Patna to reach Bhagalpur.
