Coorg

Located amidst misty hills, sandalwood forests, acres of coffee and tea plantations, Coorg (also known as Kodagu) is known for its scenic splendor nestled in the Western Ghats at the southern end. Nature at its best, you can feel the sights, sounds and the intoxicating scent of coffee, with a hint of dried ginger, cardamom and orange.

Coorg sits trapped but comfortably inside an almost closed arc formed by forests. It seems in whichever direction you go, the bustle of Madikeri town (headquarters of Coorg) gives way to an array of wilderness.
The thin mountain fog has an airbrush effect on the whole scene. Socked in this landscape lives a culture that is immensely proud of its traditions and moorings. The crux of Coorg’s tourism is all about its culture and nature.

Coffee. Who doesn’t like a nice steaming cup of coffee?  Coorg was the first coffee growing region of India. It boasts of vast plantations of coffee and is also called the coffee town. Coorg produces two vanities of coffee – Coffee Robusta and Coffee Arabica, mostly Coffee Robusta, though Coorg’s coffee tradition started with introduction of Coffee Arabica.

Coorg is called ‘The Scotland of India’ and ‘The Kashmir of South India’. Like Scotland, Coorg is mountainous, misty and cool. The highlands and the vast meadows in the valleys look identical in both the places.

With the temperature ranging between 15 degree Celsius and 20 degree Celsius throughout the year, Coorg is a year-round destination. That said, October to March is the best time for adventure activities, especially trekking. For those with a flair for adventure, the imposing Western Ghats is always ready with its intimidating peaks. March and April are the favoured months to experience the valley shrouded in white flowers. The monsoon season lasts from June to September in Coorg and there are chances of heavy rainfall. However, the beauty of Coorg is certainly enhanced during this period.

You can also explore the heritage, the mystical side of this coffee town wherein you can lose yourself in this unexplored territory and return home with some unforgettable memories. Travel enthusiasts can enjoy the breath taking landscapes and serene environment that this small town possesses. If you are one of those who’d love to spend some quiet time, away from the bustling city life, then this is the perfect destination.

About Shreya Chaudhury

First of all, if you are going to use incorrect grammar, steer clear of Shreya Chaudhury. A proper grammar Nazi, a hardcore music enthusiast (never seen without her headphones), a professional baarat dancer and a die hard Jeffrey Archer fan, you will probably find this 17 year old with a novel in hand, day dreaming about all these places she wants to travel in the future. If only time machines worked..
