PM Modi may urge discussion about ‘intolerance’ in Parliament Winter Session

The Prime Minister requested all the parties to ‘cooperate’ on the issue

Delhi: Despite the rising restlessness of the Opposition over issues like the increased intolerance amongst the Indian people, the Government has forecasted a positive and result-bearing session in the parliament this season. An All-Party meet on Wednesday ruled the uninterrupted functioning of the two Houses as primary. However, the ministers are not certain about the situation next week.

While Opposition parties like the Congress, Left, JD(U) and the RJD have been keen to debate on the two issues of intolerance and the GST, Venkaiah Naidu, Parliamentary Affairs Minister has emphasized that instances of intolerance are under the states’ individual legislation, but that the Ruling Party will accept dialogue if it is of import to the Opposition’s agenda in the regular session next week. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commented that he hopes peaceful coordination and cooperation amongst parties to fulfill the expectations of the popular opinion. He also said the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley would soon deliberate with Opposition leaders on the GST and negotiate with them. However, the premier is expected to personally preside over the intolerance debate. The JD(U) is in support of the measure taken up for a better GST at the meet.

At the same time, BJD leader Bhartruhari Mahtab has proposed a special ‘Constitution Day’ sitting, since disputes in the Parliament have often disregarded the smaller parties’ opportunities to put forward their views. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has encouraged other leaders to revive constitutio0nal values to demolish intolerance and that a resolution must e adopted at the end of the 2-day B R Ambedkar special meet, backed by CPM’s Sitaram Yechury. Ironically, the resolution may be a bone of contention amongst parties in the parliament, as they would need to reach an agreement over the resolution’s wording and content.

The meet also saw some other parties bringing up other important issues for discussion. The Trinamool Congress appealed for the peaceful working of the Parliament itself, bringing to light the counter-productive Monsoon session. Naresh Gujral, a leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, advocated action against the rise of extremist ideologies in Punjab (he brought up the 1980 riots, pointing out the Congress). On the other hand, Sharad Yadav of the JD(U) introduced the Madhesi agitation Nepal and its adverse effects on the Indo-Nepal relationship. Ramgopal Yadave of the Samajwadi Party demanded strict action Supreme Court ruling striking down the national judicial appointments commission.
