Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Saturday, vowed to do “everything to see organizers and executors of the vile and cynical murder (of the leader of opposition) are punished.” The Leader of Opposition, Borris NeMstov was brutally murdered on a bridge near Kremlin, by unidentified assailants, who shot him four times in the back.

In a telegram to Borris Nemstov’s mother, published on the Kremlin website, the Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote, “Please accept my deepest condolences on the irreparable loss. I sincerely share the grief has befallen you.”

“Boris Nemtsov, left his mark on the history of Russia, in politics and public life. He dropped out to work on important positions in the difficult transition period for our country,” he wrote, while adding, “He always openly and honestly stated his position, defended his point of view.”

The slain leader had in a recent interview asserted that he was afraid the Russian President would have him killed and had appealed for people’s support for a march this Sunday at Moscow. Hours after the revelation and appeal, Mr Nemstov was murdered.

The BBC reported that he was gunned down a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin, in an area which is always tightly policed, and where security cameras are everywhere you look. He was, it appears, tracked for hours as he travelled around central Moscow.

US President Barack Obama condemned the murder of Mr Nemstov, and thousands of people left flowers on the site of his murder.

The police are probing the matter and the assailants are being hunted. The march Mr Nemstov was calling for has hence been cancelled and instead, a mourning march will be head in the city.
