Hassan Nasrallah to launch an attack on Sunni militants

Nasarallah

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah says that his Lebanese Shia group will initiate an attack inside the nation of Syria, on the Sunni militants who have been fighting for the al-Nusra Front, in a latest statement issued by him.

Nasrallah further stated that the mountainous border areas of Qalamoun would be the main target, but ambiguity prevails about the exact time of attack. The Syrian rebel forces, which frequently target ‘his group’ from across the border, posed an unacceptable threat.

Hezbollah, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has sent hundreds of thousands of troops to join and support in the Syrian civil war.

In a televised address to the masses on Tuesday, Nasrallah said that cross-border attacks and intense conflicts by the militants from the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front posed an unacceptable threat to Lebanon’s security and required “radical treatment”. “The (Lebanese) state is not able to address this issue… so we will proceed with the necessary treatment and assume the responsibility and consequences,” he further remarked.

Most of the border regions had been re-captured from al-Nusra Front and Islamic State troops, the previous year, after a major assault by Syrian government troops that had been supported by the Hezbollah fighters.

Fighting from Syria often results into related conflicts in to the neighbouring country of Lebanon, with frequent cross-border clashes and bombings. The Syrian conflict has also escalated and given rise to many more prevailing tensions in Lebanon – which suffered in its own civil war between the years of 1975 and 1990.
