Ex-Janata parties merge, Mulayam leads the alliance

merger

Six erstwhile Janata parties merged themselves on Wednesday to form a third front. The newly formed party will be led by the Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. He will lead the party with leaders of other constituent party’s, forming a team to look after all affairs.

“It has been unanimously decided that Mulayam Singh Yadav ji will be the President of new political group,” Janata Dal-United chief Sharad Yadav said at a joint press conference.

“We have decided to take on the Narendra Modi government together. Communalism is a grave threat before the country,” RJD chief Lalu Prasad said. His former enemy and Janata Dal-United leader Nitish Kumar said, ” I congratulate Mulayam Singh Yadav. This party will give a new direction to Indian politics.”

The six parties that merged were the Samajwadi Party, the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), the Janata Dal-Secular JD-(S) and the Samajwadi Janata Party-Rashtriya (SJP-R).

“The name of party, symbol and flag will be decided after taking into consideration views of presidents of all the six parties,” Sharad Yadav announced.

The big merger was rumoured to be named as the Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP).

All the leaders of the 6 parties met at Mulayam Singh’s Delhi residence before the joint press conference. Sources say that the party will endorse Nitish Kumar as the Chief Ministerial candidate for Bihar.

BJP has given strong performances in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir after coming to power at the Centre in May, 2014. This merger wants to take on BJP for which efforts are being made by all leaders. In the 2014 general elections, the BJP and its allies won 31 out of 40 Bihar’s seats.
