Reliance Industries chairman and India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani could face central probe into the construction of his 27-storey luxury home, Antilia, one of the most expensive private residences in the world. Last year Ambanis moved into Antilia on Altamount Road in south Mumbai. Reportedly it has six floors of parking, swimming pools, a ballroom, a cinema and three helipads.
The Maharashtra state government is checking whether central investigators should look into alleged irregularities over the sale of the land which belongs to minority welfare committee.
Maharashtra Minority Affairs and Wakf minister, Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan inform assembly that the 48,782 square foot area had originally been reserved for the education of Muslim children. Ambani bought the same from Currimbhoy Ebrahim Khoja Orphanage Trust for $4.77 million in 2002. The alleged deal was approved by then Mumbai Charity Commissioner but the minister informed that Ambanis did not take permission from the Maharashtra State Wakf Board. Opposition leaders are also claiming that the plot was actually worth five billion rupees and Ambanis got it cheaply.
Recently Forbes magazine ranked Mukesh Ambani as the world’s ninth richest man with a $27-billion fortune.
