According to the data from Central Statistical Office, the vegetable prices have risen up by 2.21 percent. The potato prices increasing from 35.45 percent from 3.57 percent a month ago. As the temperature is aiming high in most of the parts of the country, causing an outburst of the heatwave, the prices of the vegetables too, can be subjected to volatility, according to traders. Thus affecting consumer inflation.
The monsoon is expected to bring some relief to the consumers by the first week of June unless we experience a gush of delayed monsoon.
“Severe heatwave condition across most parts of India has led to dropping of flowers and fruits, thereby impacting production and increasing prices,” said Shriram Gadhave, president of the All India Vegetable Growers Association in Pune. “Tomato currently being sold at Rs. 20 a kg in wholesale will touch Rs. 50-60 a kg in the next few days,” he added.
Saying the prices will remain firm with some changes in the prices, tomato will be the next one to rise.
“In retail, prices will be 3-4 times higher. In hot weather, losses to the vendor are higher and hence he will keep prices firm,” said Rajendra Sharma the Chairman of Azadpur Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee in Delhi. He later added saying that supplies from the Yamuna bank are expected soon. Ladies finger was available for Rs. 13-23 a kg in Delhi’s wholesale markets and was being sold at Rs. 60-70 a kg at the retail level. In Pune, tomato wholesale prices were Rs. 20 a kg compared with retail rates of Rs. 35-40 a kg.
It should be noted that the supplies of vegetables outside the state have been decelerating on some days, as a result the wholesale prices jump by 50-100 per cent.
