India wrestles ahead in the medals’ tally

India had a golden day at Glasgow in the Commonwealth Games as far as Wrestling is concerned for the Indian wrestlers managed to bag as many as 3 gold medals in possible four.

India-wrestles-ahead-in-the-medals’-tallyIt all began with Amit Kumar winning the first gold in the Men’s 57 Kg freestyle wrestling category. Vinesh Phogat added the second gold in wrestling when she beat Yana Rattigan from England in the Women’s 48 Kg freestyle category. Sushil Kumar expectedly won the third gold on the day in wrestling as he had it fairly easy against Qamar Abbas of Pakistan in the Men’s 75 Kg category. India missed the fourth gold by a whisker when Rajiv Tomar lost out to Jarvis from Canada in the 125 Kg event. It was a close battle and Tomar lost it 3-0 in the 6 minutes bout.

India’s impressive performance in shooting continued as Harpreet Singh managed to pick up silver in 25m rapid fire pistol event. Manavjeet Singh won a bronze medal in the men’s trap event after losing out closely in the semi finals. However Olympic medalist Vijay Kumar put up a disappointing show when he failed to grab any medal in this edition of the tournament.

Vikas Thakur, in the men’s 85Kg weightlifting event grabbed a silver and he did it when he was in severe pain. So it was really a valiant performance from the Indian as India had a fairly successful day at Glasgow.

Amidst all these success stories India’s poor run in the hockey against the world no. 1 Australia continued as they lost 4-2 in the group match. The only positive that India can take from this match that it was never a Vikas Thakurone-sided affair like the previous outings as India created lots of opportunities in the final 35 minutes and had the Aussies under pressure. Even in the first half India’s defense played well to keep the Men in Yellow at bay but a lapse in concentration followed up by a miss-pass resulted in a couple of goals and from that point India had no chance of coming back into the match despite playing better in the second half.

In all it was an eventful day for the Indians at Glasgow although there were few failures. And one or two failure does get eclipsed when you have a great day in various events that has made the country proud.
