The Tale of Melon City…Long Live the King!

The game of wrestling in the arena of Bihar finally ends! Nitish Kumar with his positive attitude and Lalu Prasad with his popular speeches are crowned as joint winners. Modi ji and Amit Shah are left speechless. Short of words, they have tasted the thunder of the Biharis.  What will happen to the State after a while God knows as the winners have had thunderous bouts of verbal punching with each other in previous elections. But at present the entire State has gone surreal and intoxicated with the duo’s win. Media’s frenzied efforts to show every minute happening is commendable. Oh boy! I feel even the game of wrestling is not the correct metaphor for the ‘game of elections’ as once nursing strong and abhorrence grudges towards Biharis, the Shiv Sena too has come forward to congratulate the duo.

Niltish Kumar undoubtedly stands apart and is termed as one of the best Chief Ministers, Bihar has ever had! Let us now not remember, his blunder of crowning Jiten Manjhi which Nitish Kumar surely must have regretted as the State cried and begged him not to do so… because soon Nitish ji realized his mistake and tried his best to do whatever he could do to ‘stitch the tear’   which had brought tear in so many eyes and the magnanimous Biharis gave him the chance- trusted him- reposed their faith in him. After all, ‘Who Sikandar hee doston kehlata hain- Hari baazi jo jeet jata hai!’ And Nitish Kumar has won this game of wrestling which has brought sweat on many foreheads!

At one point it really seemed that ‘Abki baar- Modi Sarkar’ in Bihar! And I thought of making up for my mistake. As when one of my students had asked me, ‘Ma’am as you are from Bihar, who do you think will win?’ Now this was a tough question as decades have passed when I actually left the State and settled in Haryana. But my roots are still there and all know I really blossom when I visit my hometown, so I had to answer. I replied, ‘Nitish Kumar’. It was an instant answer almost, like a ‘slip of tongue’ but I stuck to it.

So when news started pouring in that BJP might win and there is ‘kaantein ki takkar’, I was thinking of some probable explanations for that kid as to whom probably I had given the wrong answer but this one Bihari- Nitish Kumar made my answer go correct! I too was revelling in his victory and again this was an ‘instant revelation’! However the lurking fear of his partner’s jungle raj is gnawing up my mind slowly and slowly…

I am reminded of Vikram Seth’s poem, ‘Tale of Melon City’! He who sits at the throne is the King even if it is a melon! But here we have sensible person, Nitish ji and with much faith I request him not to further divide Bihar on the basis of caste etc. or to make a ‘melon’ sit on the throne as he had done earlier! Vote banks surely rest on ‘reservation’ in education and services etc. The beauty of victory is when a just and ‘thinkable sarkar’ is in power. Ek Bihari- Sab par bhari. Then please be a ‘bhari’ Nitish ji and root out all the diseases from roots.
