Mohun Bagan, the century old football club from Bengal, was banned from I-League for two-years by All India Football Federation as a punishment for abandoning their violence-marred I-League match against arch rival East Bengal at Salt Lake Stadium on December 9.
“The decision was taken today by the I-League Core Committee which also declared all of club’s matches in the I-League Competition 2012-2013 cancelled and considered null and void,” the AIFF said in a statement. “Justice Ganguly in his report has concluded that the decision of MMB for not playing the match after the interval cannot be supported on the grounds of Force Majeure and accordingly MMB has breached Regulation 22 of the I-League Regulation 2012-2013,” it further reads.
One of the oldest football clubs in Asia, Mohun Bagan, will now face suspension from taking part in the next two seasons of the I-League Competitions and also lose the opportunity to play directly to the I-League first division. To qualify to the first division league of 2016-17 Mohun Bagan will now has to play in the second division league in 2015-16 season.
The Kolkata giant also has to pay huge monetary penalty and the amount will be decided on January 9 at the AIFF core committee meet.
Mohun Bagan had refused to play due to security reason in the second half of their match against East Bengal after their player Syed Rahim Nabi got hit on the face by a stone.
Mohun Bagan, however, is allowed to play in other tournaments including Federation Cup and local leagues.
