Federer finally makes it

It was finally a dream come true for the 32-year old Swiss when he won the final game of the Davis Cup final last night against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. He won the match 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets to lead Switzerland to their first Davis Cup triumph in the history of 114 year old Swiss tennis.

The day did not begin in the way Federer would have liked to. He succumbed to Gael Monfils of France 1-6, 4-6, 3-6 in straight sets in his opening game. He looked uncomfortable on the slippery clay court. It seemed that it was that back spasm which enforced him to withdraw from last week ATP Masters’ Final was troubling him again. However the maestro showed why he is regarded as one of the legends of the game. Partnering Stanislas Wawrinka he won the doubles tie against the French duo of Richard Gasquet and Julien Benneteau. In the penultimate match of the face off, Federer was simply at his best as he whipped aside the challenge of Richard Gasquet to lift the trophy for the first time.

The Davis Cup is not a personal achievement. Still it will make his trophy cabinet all the more complete besides the 17 Grand slams and numerous ATP trophies. It was mixed season for the maestro for he failed to win any of the Grand Slams but on the final day of the season that did not seem to be bothering Federer much as he won a title which he would have liked to add to his repertoire.
